When the Seattle Seahawks drafted Rashaad Penny in the first round with the twenty-seventh pick overall, many felt that Penny would be the starter. That may not be the case according to longtime Seahawks beat writers Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.

Seahawks rumorsCondotta wrote a break down of the Seattle Seahawks roster explaining position depth and why certain players will have a chance to become the starter. Condotta points out that Rashaad Penny will most likely be a change of pace running back to start, as well as the team’s kick returner.

His pick for the Hawks RB1 is Chris Carson.

Carson averaged 4.2 yards a carry and showed potential to be the starting running back for the Seattle Seahawks last season. Carson’s 2017 season was cut short due to injury. After Carson went down, the Seahawks never had a running back emerge to take the job.

The Seahawks don’t follow the same NFL draft strategy that the rest of the NFL does. While their picks can sometimes lead to criticism, their aggressive outside the box approach did build the Seahawks into the championship team. Improving their offensive line would have been the obvious move, but the team decided to add Penny, an explosive running back into the mix.

For fantasy football purposes, Rashaad Penny has the ability to be the lead back, but he’s not going to be handed the job and may have to beat out Carson in training camp. Penny ran a 4.46 at the NFL combine. He is an agile runner with breakaway highlight reel speed. As for Carson, he made a name for himself last preseason when he showed flashes of being the running back that Seattle was searching for. This situation is one that we will have to watch in camp and this upcoming NFL preseason.
