Keke Coutee Receiving High Praise
Date: July 16th | 2018

According to Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle, Texans all-time great wide receiver Andre Johnson likes what he has seen so far from Keke Coutee.

“To see the kid Keke, how he is and how much he can help them in the return game, great receiver,” said Johnson.

Johnson holds nearly every Texans receiving record, so any kind of encouragement from him to a young rookie wide receiver holds weight.

Keke Coutee was drafted in the 4th round of the 2018 NFL draft and will be battling for the slot receiver role with former 3rd round pick Braxton Miller. The Texans are hoping that Coutee will put some much-needed pressure on Miller this offseason.

There is also a Texans rumor that a large part of why the team drafted Coutte is because of Wes Welker. Welker, who is now a wide receiver coach for the Texans played college football at Texas Tech. Both wide receivers have the same mold as a true NFL slot wide receiver.

John Perry, the other Texans wide receiver coach, also added “He has done a good job. He’s working hard and shows up every day. He is doing everything we have asked him to do. If he continues to do that, I can see him moving forward.”

Coutee has a real shot at winning the starting nod as he has the speed and the agility the Texans are looking at conveying for that slot receiver role. They have been without a true slot wide receiver now since Bill O’Brien has taken over as head coach.

Fantasy Take:

If Keke Coutee can win the slot receiver role on top of being involved in the return game this season, Coutee’s Fantasy worth could have some decent value in dynasty leagues and even deep redraft leagues with large bench spots, especially with Deshaun Watson at quarterback at the helm. Bruce Ellington is on a one-year contract and Braxton Miller could potentially be cut if Coutee continues this latest trend. If the Texans use Coutee like the Patriots did for Wes Welker, he could see a bigger leap in fantasy production than expected.

My take: Personally, I think Bruce Ellington wins the slot job in the beginning, he stepped up huge last season. Miller will be cut and Coutee starts as a return man but wins the trust of the coaching staff and takes over as the slot man after a few games into the season.
