New York Jets Early Favorite In Kirk Cousins Free Agency Odds

Can The Jets Land Kirk Cousins?

There are a lot of teams desperate to get a franchise quarterback but none more eager than the New York Jets and Denver Broncos. The Jets have had just one winning season in the past 7 years and more recently suffered back to back 5-11 win seasons. The Broncos did win the Super Bowl in 2015 but quickly fell off the map when Peyton Manning retired. Both are front-runners to land Kirk Cousins, the top free agent quarterback in this years NFL Free agent market, however, rumors are the Jets are “all in” on landing Cousins.

You know it’s the NFL offseason when a vast directory of online betting sites are providing betting odds on things like where Kirk Cousins will sign.

Kirk Cousins Next Team Betting Odds

  • New York Jets -140
  • Denver Broncos +160
  • Cleveland Browns +1000
  • Arizona Cardinals +1200
  • Minnesota Vikings +1200
  • Jacksonville Jaguars +1400
  • Buffalo Bills +1600
  • NY Giants +2800
  • Miami Dolphins +2800

Despite the Broncos being a more complete team, with a better defense and proven veteran wide receivers in Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, the Jets seem to be the early favorite to land Cousins. The New York Post’s Brian Costello was told the Jets could offer Kirk Cousins $60 million in the first year of his contract. They are essentially willing to overpay as they feel they can’t go into another season without a franchise quarterback.

The history of starting quarterbacks for the New York Jets over the last 20 years is not a list of names you would classify as Hall of Famers.

New York is reportedly “willing to pay whatever it takes” to land Cousins. However, some Jets fans would rather take their chances in the NFL Draft. You could argue the team hasn’t been competitive since the Jets drafted a quarterback in the first round. Mark Sanchez did take the Jets to two back to back AFC Conference Championships and was apart of the team throughout a four-year span where the team only had one losing season. However, as fast as Mark Sanchez was dubbed the “Sanchize” he was quickly named “Butt Fumble.” You need to have thick skin to play for the Jets, and after everything Kirk Cousins has gone through playing for Redskins, he could be the perfect fit.

There are four to five quarterbacks projected to go in the first round of this years NFL Draft and while drafting a rookie may be cheaper, the Jets don’t have the greatest history of drafting quarterbacks.

Jets QB Draft History
  • Christian Hackenberg – 2nd round (2016)
  • Bryce Petty – 4th round (2015)
  • Tajh Boyd – 6th round (2014)
  • Geno Smith – 2nd round (2013)
  • Greg McElroy – 7th round (2011)
  • Mark Sanchez – 1st round (2009)
  • Erik Ainge – 5th round (2008)
  • Kellen Clemens – 2nd round (2006)

If Cousins is after money, the Jets will likely get their man, but if the former Washington Redskins gun-slinger is also factoring in surrounding talent, the Jets will need to be prepared to make a few promises. The Jets are currently 4th in the NFL with available salary cap space, behind only the Browns, Colts and 49ers. With $73 Million in available funds, the team will need to lockup a few additional weapons to make their potential free agent QB call New York home.

Mike Maccagnan, the New York Jets general manager, just had his contract extended, along with head coach Todd Bowles. Despite the recent ownership support, Maccagnan’s decision making and efforts to land Cousins will be under the New York microscope over the next few months. Personally, I do think Cousins will end up signing with the New York Jets, but if the Jets don’t play their cards right this could all go sour for them very quickly.
