SOURCES: New York Jets Looking To Use No. 6 Pick To Trade For Nick Foles
At the upcoming 2015 NFL Draft, the New York Jets will pick at number six. With some mock drafts predicting Marcus Mariota slipping to six, the New York Jets might just trade the right to pick him for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles.
There are rumors that Eagles head coach Chip Kelly is already plotting a move to move up in draft to get Mariota. The Eagles, who have the 20th overall pick, will allegedly do anything they can to move up at the draft. NJ.Com has articles and reports saying that the team is already committed to acquire Chip Kelly’s favorite quarterback from Oregon.
“From No. 20, it’s certainly not going to be easy,” an unnamed source told NJ.com. “It’s probably going to take moving up twice to do it. There’s going to be some wheeling and dealing involved. Can it happen? I don’t know. But they’re going to try.”
A lot of experts and columnists also believe that the Eagles will do whatever it takes to trade up for the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner in the NFL Draft. Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer even said in an interview that he expect the Eagles to try hard to get Mariota.
“Unless I’m missing something here, if Marcus Mariota is available, the Eagles are going to do whatever it takes to get him.”
“I don’t think it’s any secret that (coach) Chip Kelly loves Mariota. He’s equated him to Peyton Manning. So he wants Marcus Mariota. What we don’t know (is) if he thinks Marcus is worth what he thinks it will take to move up to go get him. They’re going to make a real strong effort to go up and get him.”
If ever the Jets will be given the chance to draft Mariota, they will likely exchange it for Nick Foles. Although the Jets badly need a new quarterback, they will surelyget someone who has already proven something in the field. Foles, who went 14-5 under Kelly in two seasons, could be their guy. Foles has showed some brilliance a couple of years ago. He recorded 27 touchdowns with just two picks in 2013. Although he played miserable last season with 13 turnovers including 10 interceptions before going down with an injury, he is still a reliable and time tested quarterback compared to Mariota.
Foles could be a perfect fit for the Jets. Although some may say that they should stick with using the draft for Mariota because of his youth and physical strength, he might not have the experience to lead the team. With Foles, at least New York knows what to expect from him.
The Jets are in desperate need of a reliable quarterback. With Michael Vick and Geno Smith failing to impress last season, the team will likely get a new one. Getting Mariota is not a bad decision at all. He is a Heisman Trophy winner and a Rose Bowl MVP for a reason. But for many fans, they are much better with Nick Foles.
