Fantasy Impact: Brandin Cooks Traded To Rams
The New England Patriots traded Brandin Cooks to the LA Rams on Wednesday. The Patriots received the Rams 1st round pick (23rd overall) and 6th round pick in the upcoming 2018 NFL Draft. The Rams add a speedy deep threat wide receiver along with the Patriots 2018 4th round pick.
Brandin Cooks will now play for his third team in three years. Cooks will replace Sammy Watkins who the Rams traded for last year but signed with the Chiefs in free agency this offseason.
The Patriots made this trade as they didn’t view Cooks as a No. 1 receiver, and according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, despite Cook’s numbers, he wasn’t a great fit in the Patriots’ offense. The Patriots traded Cooks while his stock value was high, being it is his contract year.
Rams Head Coach Sean McVay seems very excited with the addition of Brandin Cooks as he was quoted saying “there’s really no limitations in how you can utilize him.” Considering the team traded for Sammy Watkins last year, this move seems to be more about upgrading what Watkins wasn’t able to do and less about building an “all in” Super Bowl roster. While it is true the Rams are adding a large number of one-year players with the hope of putting together a team that can go all the way, NFL Network’s Steve Wyche reports the Rams do plan to sign contract-year WR Brandin Cooks to an extension prior to the start of the 2018 season.

Rams Fantasy Impact
Anyone who uses Sammy Watkins 2017 statistics as a comparable, is missing the point to why the Rams let Watkins leave in free agency and why the team traded for Cooks. Clearly, the Rams didn’t believe Watkins was a right fit for their system and wanted to be able to do more with the deep threat passing attack. Jared Goff Dynasty owners will be thrilled with the newest addition while receivers like Josh Reynolds, Robert Woods, and Cooper Kupp may lose some trade value, but realistically should still produce at a solid volume. The Rams lead the league in passing yards last season and with an upgrade to their top WR1, the team could be even more deadly in 2018.
Another reason why the team may have wanted to make the change for Cooks over Watkins was to be able to get opposing safeties out of the box. The Rams have one of the leagues best running backs in Todd Gurley and keeping defenses honest will also help their run game. Safeties will not be able to cheat up against the Rams. If they do, Goff will use Cooks in a number of ways including play-action pass to take shots down the field to burn them.
If I had to make a prediction in regards to Cooks 2018 Fantasy output, I think you could continue to expect to see his usual 1,000 to 1,100 receiving yardage with 8 to 9 touchdowns.
Overall, I feel this trade is an upgrade all-around for the Rams. It should help the offense as a whole.
Patriots Fantasy Impact
With no disrespect to some of the bigger Fantasy Football follows on Twitter, I feel anyone making Dynasty trades for guys like Kenny Britt, Phillip Dorsett, Cordarrelle Patterson or more recently signed Jordan Matthews, are overthinking things. The Patriots depth chart has never been an easy read. The Pat’s are constantly scheming week to week allowing different players to step up sporadically. However, I will say a player like Julian Edelman may return to a similar role in the Patriots offense despite his age. Overall, Brady and Gronk are the only players you can trust in this offense in Fantasy moving forward.
