Christian Kirk Fantasy Value: NFL Blind Comparison
What’s a good NFL comparison for Texas A&M wide receiver Christian Kirk? He played three years with the Aggies surpassing 70 catches, 900 yards, and seven touchdowns in all three seasons. Kirk earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2017, starting all 13 games and leading Texas A&M with 71 receptions for 919 yards and 10 touchdowns. His production in the SEC conference is a reason why he is one of the most interesting prospects entering the 2018 NFL Draft.

Originally when I started comparing players I noticed far too often people would get caught up in the names of the comparisons rather than actually looking at the measurables. So I started doing “NFL Blind Comparisons.” I’m an advocate of NFL blind comparisons because it’s an effective method to avoid bias and ensure impartiality.

Player A is Christian Kirk and as you can see he is an average athlete, but his NFL combine numbers are shockingly similar to Player B. For a receiver of Kirk’s size to only run a 4.47 40-yard dash and a 3-cone above 7.0 is a little alarming. When it comes to Kirk though you can’t just look at the metrics or the measurables because he is a guy who shows he can play on film. A player who always seems to find an opening in the zone.

- Quick in and out of breaks
- Smart football player
- Strong hands
- Dangerous with the ball in his hands
Weaknesses
- Average speed
- Catch radius
- Decent burst out of routes
- Struggles against quicker corners
- Gutsy punt returner
Back to the original question, what’s a good NFL comparison for Christian Kirk? It’s a great question because in real life and fantasy football we want to know what to expect a certain players ceiling and floor can be in the NFL. However, just because an incoming prospect is compared to a current NFL player, that doesn’t mean that’s how his career will project. Instead, I am saying he has similar athletic measurables, strengths, and weaknesses.
Player B is Green Bay Packers wide receiver, Randall Cobb.
Cobb’s play style and his athletic makeup remind me a lot of Kirk. Cobb is a very smart football player who posses a lot of intangibles that can’t be taught. He is a solid route runner who will beat you with his quickness rather than his speed. Cobb returned kicks in college just like Kirk and it may be a way for Kirk to make an impact on an NFL roster right away. Cobb’s NFL success has come out of the slot and I expect the same for Kirk.
Fantasy Value
Kirk is my number four Dynasty Football wide receiver but that can quickly change if he doesn’t land in the right scheme. Kirk isn’t the athlete I originally believed he was, rather he is a smart football player who will beat you with solid technique. The 21-year-old best case scenario is landing on a team that relies on intermediate routes and timing. Kirk will hear his name called sometime on Day 2, but not sure if it will be in round two or three.
