Teddy Bridgewater Clears Physical, Becomes 6th QB on Jets Roster
Currently, Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater, Bryce Petty, Christian Hackenberg and Joel Stave are all Quarterbacks for the New York Jets. The team also just moved up to obtain the 3rd overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, which many believe will also be a quarterback. The cost to trade up from the 6th overall pick, included two second-round choices this year (Nos. 37 and 49) and a second-rounder in 2019 to the Colts.
With two NFL Free agency deals across the league nixed due to failed physicals last week – Ryan Grant with Baltimore and Bashaud Breeland with Carolina – some wondered that maybe signing Teddy Bridgewater to a one-year contract wasn’t going to go through. However, Bridgewater passed his physical Sunday with the Jets and will now look to compete with Josh McCown for the starting job. Both quarterbacks are signed to a one-year contract.
Currently, there are many sports bettors waiting for pre-NFL Draft team win betting odds. This time of year sportsbooks will offer early odds that sometimes are worth taking advantage of before a team enters the draft. Sportsbooks are actually considered a type of authoritative information website for those building spreadsheets or algorithms for fantasy or daily fantasy. With all the player movement over the last few weeks, I’m very curious to see where a team like the Jets land in projected team win odds. However, I’m guessing a season prediction won’t able to be made until we all know who the team selects 3rd overall.
The Jets have been very aggressive throughout free agency, adding talent to make their team better. But the area of need that seems to be getting the most attention is that of the quarterback position. In the last week alone, the Jets organization has signed two quarterbacks to compete for a starting job and traded a Kings’ ransom of draft picks to move into the top three of the NFL Draft. The objective, many assume, is to draft a quarterback and have that player redshirt his rookie season. Allowing for Bridgewater and McCown to battle it out for a starting job and hopefully become competitive in 2019.
Of course, the Jets could surprise everyone and not pick a quarterback 3rd overall, although you don’t give up three second-round picks six weeks before the NFL Draft if it’s not a QB.
Assuming I’ve guessed correctly and the Jets plan to “redshirt” their franchise QB, the plan of being competitive in a year from now might not sit well with the Jets fanbase. Just about every time a team goes on record and says that they plan to have their 1st round quarterback sit and learn, the team ends up changing their mind mid-season and letting him start. In fact, Chiefs 2017 first round pick Patrick Mahomes almost became the first quarterback to officially spend his first full year on the bench since Jason Campbell of the Reskins back in 2005. Mahomes started the last game of the season in a meaningless game against the Broncos.
