Fantasy Impact: Browns Trade for Jarvis Landry and Tyrod Taylor

Project Brown: The Cleveland Rebuild

Browns General Manager Jim Dorsey has only been with the team for three months but isn’t wasting any time in trying to rebuild one of the more stagnant NFL franchises in league history. On Friday, the Browns acquired WR Jarvis Landry from the Dolphins in exchange for two draft picks. The details of the trade have yet to be released, but as Adam Schefter reports on Twitter, neither of the picks in Jarvis Landry trade are a first or second-rounder, per sources. So it will be two picks between rounds 3 and 7. Miami will acquire one pick in the upcoming draft and another in 2019.

Hours later the Browns strict again, adding QB Tyrod Taylor from Buffalo, in exchange for the No. 65 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Jarvis Landry has a large fanbase, but arguably an equal number of critics who believe he is overrated. The 25-year old wide receiver has never missed a game in his pro career and caught 401 passes in four seasons. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Jarvis Landry might still play under the terms of the franchise tag with the Browns, but the team looks to sign for him long term. Despite being traded to the worst team in the league, the Browns are aggressively rebuilding quickly. On paper, the team now has Jarvis Landry, Josh Gordon, Corey Coleman and David Njoku and pass catchers.

Tyrod Taylor joins the Browns in what could be a temporary starting role as the team grooms a high profile draft pick. The Browns hold the first and fourth-round picks in the 2018 NFL Draft, and many are expecting them to choose a quarterback with one of those two picks. Taylor, 28-years old, only really began his pro career in 2015, after being a backup for the Ravens for four seasons. The former Bills QB has made some big plays over the last three years but never gelled with the coaching staff. Despite a very strong TD to INT ratio, Taylor has never thrown for more than 20 touchdowns in a single season.

Fantasy Impact

It’s hard to support the claim that Landry will benefit from being traded to the Browns, but that’s only because we can only base things off of what we already know about former Browns rosters. The team is making a serious play at rebuilding quickly, and with the high number of draft picks and the available salary cap, it’s hard not to buy into the idea that the Browns could be a half decent team in 2018. That all being said, dynasty owners are stuck with Landry for the time being. At this point, I’m guessing the plan is to enter training camp with Tyrod Taylor penciled in as the starting QB with a possible rookie quarterback looking over his shoulder.

In terms of investing in either Landry or Taylor in Dynasty, or drafting them later than they would typically go prior to today’s trades, you could benefit from a lower overall cost or draft investment. But the situation is a wait and see for me. Until Cleveland can prove to us that they can turn this thing around, we are just witnessing another dream team being put together.

Dolphins Fantasy Impact

It’s hard to say that DeVante Parker will benefit from Landry leaving with a straight face. I didn’t buy into that hype train this year, and I’m not doing it again now. At this point, I think Kenny Stills gets a boost along with Kenyan Drake who I’ve talked about being a buy now dynasty player.

Overall, I think any knee-jerk reaction from today’s trades could result in screwing up your dynasty team. The Dolphins, Bills, and Browns are all going to be adding players in the next two months, either from the draft or free agency. I expect more changes coming, and until I see the final product, I’m holding firm.
