What’s a good NFL comparison for SMU wide receiver Courtland Sutton? There isn’t a more physically gifted receiver in this year’s NFL draft than Sutton. In his final season at SMU he racked up 68 catches for 1,085 yards with 12 touchdowns, but many NFL scouts wanted more due to his competition and athletic build. Don’t let the number fool you, Sutton suffered from poor quarterback play throughout his time in college. His measurables and naturally gifted physique are why he is my number one receiver in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Originally when I started comparing players I noticed far too often people would get lost in the names of the comparisons rather than actually looking at the measurables. Which is why I started doing “NFL Blind Comparisons.” I’m an advocate of NFL blind comparisons because it’s an effective method to avoid bias and ensure impartiality. It’s also my attempt to stay clear of internet trolls.

Player A is Courtland Sutton and as you can see he had an impressive NFL combine that showed scouts why he should go in the first round. A receiver with his size running a 6.57, 3- cone drill is incredible. His lateral quickness plus shear athletic build was on full display during the NFL scouting combine, which excites me because it’s exactly what I saw when I watched him live at SMU this past season here in Dallas, TX.

Back to the original question, what’s a good NFL comparison for Courtland Sutton?

It’s a great question because in real life and fantasy football we want to know what to expect a certain players ceiling and floor can be in the NFL. However, just because an incoming prospect is compared to a current NFL player, that doesn’t mean that’s how his career will project. Instead, I am saying he has similar athletic measurables, strengths, and weaknesses.

Player B is Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Alshon Jeffery.

The athletic build of Jeffery plus his overall play style is Sutton 2.0. Personally, I believe Sutton is a better athlete than Jeffery however, Jeffery is a more polished receiver. Jeffery is a big receiver who uses his body well, especially in the red zone. Where Sutton and Jeffery are really similar is they aren’t burners but their ability to high point the ball and run crisp routes over the middle is shockingly similar.

Fantasy Value

Calvin Ridley is widely believed to be the top wide receiver available in the 2018 NFL Draft, but I disagree. Sutton is 22 years old and a much better athlete than Ridley who is going to be 24. Sutton has the upside to be a team’s WR1 with potential to be a 10+ touchdown receiver. In rookie drafts this offseason, give me a player like Sutton with his upside over a receiver like Ridley who may have a safer floor but doesn’t have the ceiling of Sutton. I believe Sutton will be a first-round pick in the draft and even though last years first rounders were disappointments (Corey Davis, Mike Williams, and John Ross) Sutton will go later in round one which should result in him landing with a better team.
