Can Terrelle Pryor Return to Fantasy Relevance in 2018?
Terrelle Pryor Fantasy
The New York Jets have signed free-agent wide receiver Terrelle Pryor to a one-year deal worth up to $4.5 million. Pryor a former Quarterback turned receiver is looking to bounce back after a very poor season hampered by injuries with the Redskins. The soon to be 29-year-old has 2 years experience in the NFL as a receiver with some mixed results.
Year | Team | Games | Targets | Rec | Yds | TD |
2016 | CLE | 16 | 140 | 77 | 1007 | 4 |
2017 | WAS | 9 | 37 | 20 | 240 | 1 |
In 2016 with the Browns, Pryor had a breakout season with 77 receptions, 1007 yards, and 4 touchdowns with sub-par QB play. It looked as if he was ready to be a star in the league. Fast forward to 2017 Pryor signed a one year prove it deal with the Washington Redskins. Many thought he would shine in HC Jay Gruden’s offense especially with Kirk Cousins as his Quarterback. The QB was certainly an upgrade from what Pryor had played with in Cleveland, but he still ended up being a colossal bust.
Drafted in the 3rd-4th rounds of fantasy drafts Pryor let his owners down. He played in 9 games before being ruled out with an ankle in injury Week 11 but was a bust long before then. Despite showing some promise in Week 1 catching 6 passes for 66 yards on 11 targets it was mostly downhill from there.
Pryor’s lone TD reception came in Week 4 and he was non-existent from then on. Most owners were forced to stick with Pryor being that he was such a high pick, but the results never came. Eventually, it became time to pull the plug as he was dropped from most teams ending up on the waiver wire.

2018 Fantasy Outlook
So which Terrelle Pryor will the Jets get in 2018? He will certainly bolster the Jets receiving corps, especially with fellow WR Robby Anderson expected to serve some type of suspension. However, it’s tough to say what his role will be with the team since they still have a number of receivers on the depth chart. Although he is one of the more talented if not the most talented on the roster from a physical attribute standpoint. Pryor figures to line up on the outside across from deep-threat Anderson while Quincy Enunwa and Jermaine Kearse run most of their routes from the slot. Pryor and Anderson have a similar skillset as they are both burners that can get behind the defense.
OC Jeremy Bates will certainly move his receivers all around the formation to try to create mismatches, but Pryor doesn’t figure to be a high volume receiver so you’ll mostly be relying on big plays and touchdowns. At 6’4″ Pryor should be a big red-zone threat for the team that is surely lacking in that area but as most fantasy owners know chasing weekly touchdowns rarely works out well.
In 2017 the Jets finished 25th in the league with 19 passing touchdowns and 24th in passing yards with 3,182. Those numbers hope to increase in 2018, but with uncertainty at the Jets QB position, most will probably shy away from drafting the volatile receiver. Especially after he burned so many fantasy teams last season, Pryor will likely be drafted as a late-round flyer with the hopes that he can somehow find his 2016 form.
