4 Fantasy Football Breakout Candidates in 2017 You Should Target
Breakout Candidates in 2017
Identifying breakout candidates before your league-mates do is a key ingredient of winning fantasy leagues. Sometimes these players are found by luck, but often it requires research and strategic draft decisions. Don’t be afraid to reach a little to obtain these players and reap the rewards come playoff time.
The following are my personal top four potential breakout candidates for 2017
- Jameis Winston
Tampa Bay Buccaneers | QB
What an off-season the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had this spring. First, they signed burner Desean Jackson to a 3-year deal. Then, they drafted TE OJ Howard and WR Chris Godwin in the NFL draft. Those three weapons, along with Mike Evans and Cameron Brate, have the arrow pointing straight up for Jameis Winston.
Mike Evans is arguably one of the top-5 receivers in the game. Also, Brate tied Hunter Henry for the most TDs scored by any TE last season. To compliment those two, Desean Jackson brings blazing speed that the Tampa Bay offense has never seen in Winston’s time there.
On top of that, OJ Howard is arguably the top-ranked TE in this year’s loaded rookie class. His combination of size and speed could make him an exceptional Red Zone target that is very tough to guard all over the field. Finally, Godwin is a young receiver who is great in contested catch situations. He could eventually step into the WR2 role when Jackson leaves the team.
Upgrading Winston’s weapons was a huge priority for Tampa Bay this offseason, and rightfully so. They have a franchise QB that is ready to explode onto the scene.
- CJ Prosise
Seattle Seahawks | RB
Prosise flashed tremendous potential in the limited action he saw last season as a rookie. He brought an added dimension to the Seahawks’ passing game in the games he played.
The team is clearly not too fond of fellow RB Thomas Rawls, as they just signed Eddie Lacy to a one-year deal. On the surface, the Seattle backfield seems pretty crowded this season. However, Prosise seems to have the most defined role out of the three backs. He figures to play the third-down role and might even get some early down work if he can play as well as he did last year. He is a great play in PPR leagues, as he figures to average about 4-6 catches a game, keeping his floor relatively high.
The one knock on Prosise has been his health. He has had a few injuries the last couple of years, but Rawls and Lacy have also been injured as well. If you believe Prosise can stay healthy, target him aggressively this year.
- Donte Moncrief
Indianapolis Colts | WR
Here we go again. Another summer filled with countless articles predicting a breakout for 4th-year receiver Donte Moncrief. His hype train really took off last summer and catapulted his ADP.
While last season was a bit of a disappointment, he wasn’t really given a fair chance to succeed. He suffered numerous injuries last season, including a fractured scapula that caused him to miss five games in the beginning of the season. On top of that, his quarterback recently admitted he has been playing through a shoulder injury for the past two seasons. Having both players finally healthy this season could lead Moncrief to have the breakout season we have all been waiting for.
While Moncrief was on the field last year, he scored a touchdown in seven of eight games he finished. While touchdowns are fickle from year to year, he has displayed a knack for finding the end zone.
The Colts signed Kamar Aiken this off-season and GM Chris Ballard said he was signed to not only push Phillip Dorsett but Moncrief too. The inclusion of Moncrief’s name can be viewed as a way to motivate Moncrief to reach his full potential.
It’s also a contract year for Moncrief, who is playing out the last year of his rookie deal. As a result, he will have every incentive to step up his game. In order to finally live up to the expectations a lot of people had of him early in this career, it’s time for Moncrief to finally deliver.
- Corey Coleman
Cleveland Browns | WR
The Cleveland Browns are starting to turn their team around, and Corey Coleman figures to be a key beneficiary of that process. They let Terrelle Pryor walk in free agency, which opened the door for Coleman to become the team’s top receiver. They signed WR Kenny Britt, who enjoyed amassed more than 1,000 receiving yards last season. He is a big-bodied receiver that compliments Coleman’s speed and quickness quite well. The Browns also drafted TE David Njoku in the first round this season. While still raw, he has the size and athleticism to cause matchup nightmares and be a star in this league.
Having more passing options should give Coleman the ability to operate in space, which is where he thrives. It’s not like Britt and Njoku are going to be demanding 140 targets a year like Pryor did anyways.
Coleman missed six games early in the season due to a broken hand he sustained in practice, which stunted his growth once he returned to the field. A full off-season with the trainers and coaches will really allow Coleman to become more comfortable with the Browns’ offense and personnel.
Coach Hue Jackson also recently mentioned Coleman has stepped up and become a leader amongst the WR group. Reports like that, along with the increased opportunities he will be given this year, are why you should target Coleman.
