Chiefs Offensive Players Gushing Over Pat Mahomes
Date: August 1st | 2018

Patrick MahomesPat Mahomes has made a solid impression on his teammates early in camp, drawing praise from both Tyreek Hill and Kareem Hunt most recently.

“Pat is the first guy that I have played with that has the arm strength,” Hill said on Monday. “That’s not taking anything away from other quarterbacks I have played with, but Pat is something special.”

“He’s just going in there with confidence, talking to everybody, making the calls,” Kareem Hunt said earlier this offseason.

Even quarterback guru and new division rival, Jon Gruden, called Mahomes “The real deal” and “A talented, gun-slinging quarterback” on a recent interview during NFL Network’s training camp coverage.

SBNation’s Rebecca Toback also reported that Chiefs backup quarterback and 11 year NFL veteran Chad Henne said that Mahomes has one of the strongest arms he’s ever seen and quoted Henne saying, “For Pat’s size, I haven’t seen anything like it.”

Fantasy Spin

Mahomes is one of the top breakout candidates at the quarterback position this season next to Jimmy Garoppolo. Coach Andy Reid traded up 17 spots in the draft last season to ensure the team secured Mahomes as their future franchise quarterback. Mahomes led college quarterbacks in 2016 with 5,052 passing yards and also threw for 41 touchdowns that season. His throw velocity of 60 mph ranks in the 97th percentile on playerprofiler.com. Mahomes has also received plenty of hype as a dual-threat quarterback who ranks in the 95th percentile in agility score and managed to rush for 22 touchdowns in his last two seasons in college. The Chiefs are loaded with one of the best sets of offensive weapons in the passing game with Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and newly acquired, Sammy Watkins. Hill and Watkins both offer a deep threat that should fit Mahomes’s skill set perfectly. Then you also have a stacked running game with last year’s league-leading rusher, Kareem Hunt, who showed impressive passing game chops as well. The tools are all there for Mahomes to succeed in a powerful offense with one of the leagues best coaching staffs. It’s really all on him to make it happen. Mahomes is still largely unproven, but his 11th round ADP on fantasyfootballcalculator.com is a great value.

Kareem Hunt Behind Schedule, Spencer Ware Running with First Team
Date: July 31st | 2018

Spencer Ware Fantasy 2017Kareem Hunt missed time during the Chiefs OTA’s and minicamp with a hamstring injury that seems to still be lingering early in camp. Though it is a good sign that Hunt returned to limited action this week getting reps in 11-on-11 drills, he was spotted by ESPN Chiefs reporter Adam Teicher working on the side with a trainer still. Fellow Chiefs beat writer, Brooke Pryor, also noted that Spencer Ware was getting in work with the first team offense while Hunt was absent.

Coach Andy Reid met with the media after practice on Monday and when asked about Hunt’s progress in his rehabilitation, Reid shrugged the question off a bit just mentioning “Well, it’s progress” but didn’t care to elaborate on the situation. SBNation’s arrowheadpride.com called the team’s running back depth chart “unsettled chaos” through the first week of camp. The crew of Kent Swanson, Craig Stout and Matt Lane at SBNation broke down the depth chart recently and had this to say:

“Spencer Ware has looked fantastic in what he’s been able to participate in and everything coming out of coaches is glowing,” said Lane. “Can’t forget how good he (Ware) was two years ago when healthy and the potential of a true 1A and 1B scenario.”

“Ware has come back to the Chiefs this offseason with a bang and looks ready to contribute and challenge for the starting running back role in 2018,” Stout added.

Fantasy Spin

Hamstring injuries are one of the most nagging for athletes to get rid of and the fact that Hunt still isn’t completely over his injury that was first reported about over a month ago is a little bit of a concern. You better believe Spencer Ware is coming back into this season hungry as he sat by and watched his role taken from him last season. While Hunt has looked more explosive than Ware when comparing the two, each were successful in their own right on this offense. The fact that Hunt is still dealing with the injury is concerning for a guy that is going to cost you a late-first round draft pick in fantasy this season. Meanwhile, Spencer Ware can be had anywhere between the 13th-15th round in redraft leagues this season. Hunt is still the clear back to own here with top-5 RB upside, but this is definitely a situation to keep an eye on here as Ware could become a steal if Hunt enters the regular season at less than 100%.
