There are a lot of things and events happening right now at the Cleveland Browns camp. First and foremost, they now have a new logo. According to many experts and analysts, the Browns are also looking forward to acquire a new quarterback for next season. One of the team’s top options is no other than former Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh McCown.
The Browns technically don’t have a starting quarterback for next season. Brian Hoyer is highly likely to leave Cleveland to join another team this 2015. Overrated Johnny Manziel is obviously not in his best shape to carry the team to the winning column next season. This leaves the Cleveland front office no other choice but to look for a new quarterback for the next season.
Veteran quarterback Josh McCown was released by the Buccaneers few days ago. It’s a strong indication that Tampa Bay will select a quarterback, highly likely Jameis Winston, with the No.1 overall pick in the draft. McCown was the Bucs’ starter last season when the team finished with a disgusting 2-14 record. He completed 184 of 327 passes for 2,206 yards with 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for a 70.5 passer rating. The Bucs won only one game with McCown as their starter last season.
Despite the poor performance, Browns are still eyeing McCown as a possible starter or even a mentor for Johnny Football. Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer said that:
“The Browns have expressed interest in veteran quarterback Josh McCown and might bring him in for a visit, a league source told Northeast Ohio Media Group.”
Cabot also said that Head Coach Mike Pettine confirmed the report saying it’s one of the team’s options that’s being discussed.
McCown to Cleveland has strong possibility because of offensive coordinator John DeFilippo. In 2007, McCown was coached by Filippo who was then Oakland Raiders quarterback coach. They certainly know each other and it can make the transition easier for McCown.
There are some reports that if the team won’t sign McCown, they might just probably pick a quarterback in the draft. Cleveland has a 12th and 19th choices in the upcoming 2015 NFL Draft. Although they technically have two-first round picks, it’s pretty hard for them to get a good quarterback from the draft. The only way they can get a quarterback is to move up, which can only be done by trading their valuable assets.
Quarterback coach George Whitfield told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that there is a big possibility for the Browns to trade up for Marcus Mariota.
“It’s a very real situation, it’s always going to be a business and bottom-line situation,” Whitfield said. “And here they are with two first-round picks, and there are some talented young guys in this draft again that can play quarterback, and if they make that decision to bring him in, that’s big for him to get a chance to go in and compete with Johnny.”
The Browns is in dire need of a quarterback for next season. Getting Mariota is possible but it will take a lot of assets and talks for them to do so. Although McCown is not the best, he could be the team’s only option.
