Michael Sam will attend inaugural veterans combine

Although he’s a year removed from the draft, free agent defensive end Michael Sam was granted permission and received an invite to the NFL’s inaugural veteran combine in Arizona on March 22, ESPN’s NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports.

Sam was selected in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Rams after being named the SEC co-Defensive Player of the Year. He didn’t survive final preseason cuts and spent seven weeks on the Cowboys’ practice squad before being released.

It was announced this week that Sam will be participating in the new season of “Dancing with the Stars.” He is currently in rehearsals.

Sam, 25, continues to train in Los Angeles at a gym co-owned by former NFL linebacker Brian Urlacher and FOX NFL insider Jay Glazer.

The veteran combine will be held at the Arizona Cardinals’ training facility in Phoenix. The event is open to free agent players who were previously eligible for an NFL Draft.

Sam will work out with roughly 100 veteran free agents in front of representatives from all 32 teams.

Earlier this month marked the one-year anniversary of Sam’s landmark announcement that he is gay and wants to play in the NFL.

The 6-foot-2, 261-pound Sam, a former University of Missouri defensive end, is hoping the combine could lead to an NFL contract offer and a chance to go to training camp.
