Jameis Winston impresses at combine with his…intelligence
Former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is one of the more polarizing NFL draft prospects. He’s made headlines for good and bad reasons, and almost anyone you ask already has some sort of preconceived notion about him. His inability to stay out of the news off the field will stop some teams from taking a chance on him.
But after last week’s draft combine, Winston proved he has not only the physical tools, but the mental ones as well to become a successful NFL QB. His former coach at FSU, Jimbo Fisher, isn’t surprised at all that Winston impressed NFL teams with his football intelligence.
“Jameis, in football intellect, intelligence level, is as smart as anybody I’ve ever been around,” Fisher said on NFL Network. “You can do so many different things with him and he grasps it. He just doesn’t memorize plays, he understands the concepts of how to attack the coverage, how a play works, where his one-on-one matchups are. He just has a tremendous football intellect that way.”
“Every night, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, we get off the practice field, he eats his dinner at 6:45, and then he’s up here in the offices until 9:30, 10, 10:30 at night,” Fisher said. “He would sit and watch every practice tape and then prepare for red zone, third down, whatever it might be. A lot of guys are very talented but he likes to understand the game.”
Of course, this doesn’t answer the questions about his character. But sometimes, talent outweighs character. Winston is still a young guy who has time to mature as a person off the field. If the combine was any indication, I am willing to bet teams in need of a QB will take a chance on him, off-field issues and all.
