Falcons release veteran running back Steven Jackson

The Atlanta Falcons released running back Steven Jackson on Thursday, the team announced.

Jackson formerly played with the St. Louis Rams. He voided his contract in order to become a free agent and signed a three-year deal worth $12 million with the Falcons in 2013. A total of $4 million of the contract was guaranteed.

By cutting Jackson, the Falcons saved $3.7 million against the salary cap, according to NFL Network.

The Falcons hoped that Jackson would help replace Michael Turner, who was released after spending five productive years with the team.

Jackson was owed $3.75 million in 2015, but with running back Devonta Freeman on the roster, it appears Jackson is expendable. In 2014, Jackson rushed for 707 yards and six touchdowns on 190 carries.

Injuries affected Jackson’s play in 2013 and 2014, playing 12 and 15 games. He had 347 carries for 1,250 yards (3.6 yards per carry) and 12 touchdowns. He caught 53 passes for 339 yards and one touchdown.

Before joining the Falcons, Jackson has rushed for 10,135 yards and 56 touchdowns in the NFL since being taken in the first round (24th overall) of the 2004 draft. He also has caught 407 passes for 3,324 yards and eight touchdowns with the St. Louis Rams.
