Detroit Lions release veteran RB Reggie Bush to create cap space
The Detroit Lions have released veteran running back Reggie Bush after two seasons with the team, ESPN’s NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports.
The 29-year-old Bush had a disappointing 2014 season in which battled a lingering ankle injury. His release suggests he was unwilling to accept a pay cut to stay with the Lions, who’s main offseason concern is re-signing all-pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
The Lions entered the day with about $126 million in top-51 salary cap commitments, giving them a projected $17 million of cap space to spend on Suh, their draft class and others this offseason.
By cutting Bush, who was due a $3.25 million base salary this year and had $250,000 workout bonus in his contract, they created another $1.7 million in cap room.
Bush finished with just 297 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 76 carries. Bush also had 253 receiving yards. That’s a far cry from his 2013 season, when he posted 1,512 total yards and seven total touchdowns.
Bush had two years left on the deal he signed two years ago before being released.
