With free agency right around the corner and several specific needs on the defensive side of the ball, the Pittsburgh Steelers will look to add some pieces before the draft in April. While Pittsburgh usually isn’t a major participant in free agency and rarely make mistakes regarding how much players are paid, there’s still a couple do’s and dont’s to watch out for when March 10th arrives.

DO NOT: Overpay for unproven talent

With this rule, I am thinking specifically of cornerback Byron Maxwell from the Seattle Seahawks. He seems to be all the hype right now, and if Seattle doesn’t re-sign him, he’ll be one of the top corners on the market. Or will he? Let us not forget he played on a stacked defense, and was the weakest link in a secondary full of Pro-Bowlers. His statistics aren’t all that impressive, either. For a fair price, Maxwell would be a solid addition. But do not overpay for this guy thinking he is automatically good enough to go to a team other than the ‘Hawks and immediately be a lockdown corner. He didn’t have to do that in Seattle, and there’s no guarantee his production will equal his payday.
