Red Sox sign Dana Eveland to minor-league contract

The lefty will likely compete for a bullpen spot during spring training.

The Red Sox have reached agreement with left-hander Dana Eveland on a minor-league deal, according to a major-league source. The deal is a split contract, and includes an invitation to major-league spring training.

Eveland, 31, spent last season with the Mets, posting a 2.63 ERA in 27.1 innings out of the bullpen in what was one of the best seasons of his major-league career. He will likely get a chance to make the Red Sox' bullpen out of spring training, and will compete with Drake Britton and Tommy Layne for the second left-handed spot in the team's bullpen alongside Craig Breslow.

In nine major-league seasons with the Brewers (2005-2006), Diamondbacks (2007), Athletics (2008-2009), Blue Jays (2010), Pirates (2010), Dodgers (2011), Orioles (2012) and Mets (2014), Eveland is the owner of a lifetime 20-26 record and 5.27 ERA in 144 appearances (61 starts). The Mets were interested in retaining him this offseason.
